Research Study Involvement

1.  Doctoral Research Project, Washington University School of Medicine,  Program in Occupational Therapy, 2005-2007 

  • Enabling Occupation in Older Adults with Stroke: An Application of Cognitive Orientation to Daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP). 
    • Performed two in-depth single case studies to explore the impact of a cognitive-behavioral approach on functional skill acquisition in older adults with stroke.  Specific aims included describing treatment outcomes, strategy use across treatment sessions, and individual and contextual factors impacting the treatment process.
    • Mentored by Carolyn Baum, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, of Washington University with collaboration from Helene Polatajko, Ph.D., OT(C) of the University of Toronto.

2.  Research Assistant for Peggy Barco, OTR/L, BSW, and David Carr, M.D, Washington University School of Medicine, 2007.

  • Fitness to Drive in Neurologically Impaired Older Adults
    • Assisted with selecting the assessment battery for in-clinic evaluations
    • Created a driving habits and safety questionnaire to screen for cognitive impairment in older adults
    • Conducted a pilot study of 20 nationwide driving clinics with phone surveys to determine common components of driving evaluations
    • Performed literature reviews of relevant driving research
    • Presented literature findings at bi-weekly team meetings
    • Attended driving seminars and discussions

3.  Research Assistant for Leonard Matheson, Ph.D, Washington University School of Medicine, Program in Occupational Therapy, 2004-2006. 

  • Research study examining treatment satisfaction and post-discharge quality of life in patients at the Occupational Performance Center (OPC) at the Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis (TRISL).
    • Administered phone surveys to discharged patients
    • Managed data entry on computer
    • Assisted with maintaining an evidence-based website for the OPC
      • Wrote weekly summaries of research articles and published onto the website.

4.  Project Assistant for Lawrence Rosenkoetter, Ph.D, Department of Psychology, Oregon State University, 2004.

  • Research study examining the relationship between television viewing habits and aggression in elementary-age children
    • Administered surveys to children at area elementary schools
    • Scored surveys and performed data entry
5.  Research Assistant for Jennifer Connor-Smith, Ph.D, Department of Psychology, Oregon State University, 2003-2004
  • Research study examining stress reactivity and streams of consciousness in a young adult population
    • Analyzed videotaped assessments according to established behavioral criteria and codes
    • Transcribed audio recordings
    • Performed data entry on computer

6.  Research Assistant for John Edwards, Ph.D, Department of Psychology, Oregon State University, 2004. 

  • Research study examining social cognition and attributional styles in a young adult population
    • Administered testing protocol to participating subjects
    • Set up a computer database and performed data entry
